To mark Healthcare Simulation Week 2022, we are pleased to present a Webinar to highlight simulation advocacy, collaboration and innovation. We are honoured to have the Chair of the VSA Board, Professor Debra Kiegaldie along with two international guest speakers - Birgitte Bruun and Teresa Evans to discuss their latest simulation work.

Presentation 1

Pre-roling: a model for facilitators and simulated participants to systematically prepare together for full-scale simulations (But hey - do we really need another model?)

This webinar was recently presented at SESAM in Seville, Spain by Birgitta, Peter Dieckmann and Eva Thomas.

Birgette will present a model for systematic preparation for full-scale simulations to be used by facilitators and simulated participants together. The model has been developed on the basis of ethnographic fieldwork among novice simulated participants at the Copenhagen Academy of Medical Education and Simulation (CAMES). The model is developed to provide more explicit frames for simulated participants’ efforts to simultaneously attune to their character, the learners, and their facilitator. My talk will begin with a brief overview of the literature that have inspired our analysis of data and the development of the model, and then I will present the model itself (and then you tell me whether it might be useful or not).

About the speaker

Birgitte Bruun is a Danish anthropologist who has worked in global health shifting between roles as researcher, consultant, and project manager before obtaining a PhD from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. For the last five years Birgitte has worked as a senior researcher at CAMES in Copenhagen.

Collaborative Online International Learning: An Australian-Canadian Virtual Simulation Experience

Collaborative Online International learning (COIL) provides rewarding opportunities for students to engage across the globe and develop meaningful relationships with fellow students. Using online and digital technologies that incorporates simulation, it is possible to connect students internationally, and create significant learning experiences without the limitations of time and the financial burden of travelling abroad.

Deb and Teresa will share their experiences of developing and implementing a COIL project in nursing including how they integrated virtual reality into a virtual global classroom. They will share their work on an indigenous led design of a virtual simulation on Indigenous Health. They will also provide their insights on how to create a successful global education and research partnership for students and faculty.

About the speakers

Debra Kiegaldie is a Professor and Clinical Chair of Nursing, with Holmesglen Institute and Healthscope Hospitals in Victoria, Australia. She holds an adjunct appointment with Monash University and is the Chair of the Victorian Simulation Alliance Board of Management.

Professor Kiegaldie has led research projects on virtual reality, simulation, interprofessional education, falls and delirium. Her collaborative work extends across all health professions and includes the vocational training sector, higher education and continuing professional development. She has been the recipient of National and International awards for her research and educational work including the Victorian and Australian Industry Collaboration Training Awards; the Association of Medical Educators Europe Teaching Innovation Award; and other multimedia awards. Debra currently leads a major Australian-Canadian international research partnership funded through a Veski-Study Melbourne Research Partnership grant to develop and evaluate a COIL program and is leading the development of a Care-Economy Skills Lab for the Victorian Skills Authority.

Teresa Evans is an academic in the Faculty of Nursing, teaching in the BScN program in Grande Prairie for over 24 years. Teresa holds graduate and postgraduate qualifications in nursing, including a Master of Nursing and is currently completing her Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing with her proposed thesis: Exploring How Nursing Faculty Teach about the Assessment and Management of Pain in the Clinical Setting. Teresa’s interests lie in palliative care, pain assessment and management, and improving education around pain for nursing students. Teresa has recently been the recipient of the Alberta Graduate excellence Scholarship and is a member of the Canadian Pain Society and the International Association for the Study of Pain.
