VSA PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SERIES: Immersive Simulation in Health and Community Services

Postponed until March 2022

Just like the real thing!

These 3.5 hour workshops introduce health and community services educators to the practical application of setting up and facilitating an immersive learning experience in a simulated environment. It will include the steps taken to conduct a prebrief, how to implement a scenario and the process of facilitating an effective debrief.

These workshops are designed for all educators working in either a health care setting or in the context of the community services sector.

Two realistic simulation scenarios will be available to registrants:

Simulation One - Simulated Participants; Making It Real

Simulated participants enable learners to have the opportunity to develop and refine their interpersonal and therapeutic skills whilst working with clients in an authentic and safe learning environment without putting real patients or clients at risk. Registrants will participate in a typical workplace scenario where they will be required to respond to client needs, communicate with empathy and provide client-centred feedback.

Simulation Two - Immersive simulation; Manniken based

Beaubien and Baker (2004) discuss the use of simulation in healthcare team training and suggest additional ways to maximise the effectiveness of simulation training in this context. These include tailoring needs, using case studies, lower technical simulators to practice basic skills and using high fidelity simulators for the more complex team training in crisis situations and in time-pressured environments.

Beaubien, J. & Baker, D. (2004). The use of simulation for training teamwork skills in health care: how low can you go? Quality and Safety in Health Care, 13: 51-58.

This workshop will provide participants with an opportunity to practice planning, facilitating and debriefing manniken based team-based simulation scenarios in a safe environment.

Places are limited to 22 participants per session.
