VSA 2022 Symposium

The VSA 2022 Symposium provides you with the latest in simulation innovation through various research presentations and workshops.

Delegates will spend the first half of the day listening to a variety of presenters before spending the afternoon in the workshop of their choice. There are four workshops to choose from; Difficulty Debriefing and Feedback, Moulage, Immersive Simulation - Simulated Participants and Immersive Simulation - Manikin-based.

Lunch is included in your registration.

Workshops

Each delegate will be able to choose their preferred workshop upon registering for the Symposium. Places are limited to 20 participants per workshop so early registration is crucial to ensure that you secure your first preference. Read on to find out what each workshop involves.

Difficult debriefing and feedback

Debriefing is an integral component of simulation.  Not only does it facilitate open discussion in a safe environment, but it also allows analysis of the participants’ actions and allows the learner to reflect and make meaning of what occurred during the simulation. As debriefers, we aim to create safe challenging learning environments for the participants but sometimes find ourselves in challenging debriefing situations ourselves.

This workshop will explore common debriefing challenges, and provide an opportunity for participants to practise with instructive feedback. During this workshop, participants will:

  • Reflect and discuss challenging debriefing situations
  • Develop an understanding of contributing factors to a difficult situation
  • Identify some techniques to address challenging debriefing situations
  • Practice debriefing in a simulated environment

Moulage

This interactive workshop will introduce participants to the concepts of fidelity and realism and the rationale for moulage. Participants will demonstrate some simple moulage techniques and discuss tips and tricks for moulage. The facilitator will also be able to introduce commonly used medical terms, which may be unfamiliar to non-clinical staff.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the list of medical terms provided, and match them to definitions
  • Discuss concepts of fidelity and the rationale for applying moulage
  • Demonstrate techniques for applying moulage

Immersive simulation – Simulated participants

This workshop will outline key features of a quality scenario design and provide you with an opportunity to create your own scenario and simulated participant script using an established simulation scenario-writing framework.

Using interactive small group methods such as discussions, brainstorm activities, paired exercises and small group practical hands-on activities, this workshop will provide you with the opportunity to:

  • Identify core aspects of a communication skills learning and teaching process
  • Appraise the advantages and challenges associated with simulated participant methods in health and community services education
  • Discuss the features and rationale of a well-constructed simulation scenario and simulated participant script
  • Create an individualised simulation scenario and simulated participant script

Immersive simulation – Manikin based – Fundamentals

This workshop will provide participants with a variety of tips and tricks, and hands-on practice in planning and facilitating simulation programs specific to their environment.

During this workshop, participants will:

  • Discuss and share policies and processes required to facilitate a simulation program
  • Discuss and share templates that can be adapted to various settings
  • Discuss tips and tricks for a successful simulation scenario
  • Design and implement a simulation scenario

Don't miss out on securing a place in your preferred workshop. All workshops are limited to 20 participants.
